Preview of Figure Skating’s World Team Trophy 2025
It’s time for our favorite competition that only happens twice every quadrennial: the World Team Trophy in Tokyo, Japan!
We know this competition is somewhat divisive; some love its team spirit, and some don’t love its often campy nature (which is honestly out favorite part!). Regardless, it’s happening and if you are anything like us, you’re just happy to get to see all of these programs one more time!
Similar to the Olympic Team competition, team members from each qualifying country have been selected by their respective federations to participate. Each of the six countries competing get two women, two men, one pair, and one dance team — who each receive points based on their placement in each discipline that are used to rank teams. Whichever team has the most points by the end of the competition wins.
More or less importantly, depending on how your see it, each team gets to decorate their Team space in the kiss-and-cry — and many of them also bring props, wear wacky hats and glasses, and sometimes even show up in a Pokemon onesie (looking at you, Evgennia Lopareva).
Who’s competing here, you ask? Only a who’s who of skating this season, including all 4 recently crowned World Champions! Also, Georgia is bringing a few skaters out of retirement to compete, which makes us wonder if we’ll see those faces again next season leading up to the Olympic Games.
